NAGC sent us the following information regarding the 2010-2011 media campaign to raise awareness of the needs of gifted children and GAGC will follow-up; however, we wanted to share this information with anyone interested in this special population.
2010-2011 State of the States in Gifted Education
Media Campaign to Raise Awareness of Needs of Gifted Children
Greetings State Association Leaders!
NAGC is pleased to publish the biannual report of state policies and practices in gifted education with the Council of State Directors of Programs for the Gifted. The 2010-2011 edition of the State of the States report is now complete and is available for purchase on a flashdrive from the NAGC online bookstore.
NAGC is conducting a media campaign to call attention to the patchwork quilt effect of the uneven support for gifted students across the nation. We are distributing a national news release and working to place an op-ed piece in a major newspaper in connection with the official release of the report on November 9, 2011.
In addition to our national efforts, we encourage state associations to plan their own releases to increase the effectiveness of this media effort and to draw attention to the needs of gifted and talented students in your states.
Media Tools for State Associations
To help state associations use the release of State of the States to call attention to the condition of gifted education in their own states, we have drafted sample state news release templates – one for states with a generally positive experience with gifted education and one with little to no good news about gifted education so that all of your states can participate in this effort.
We’ve also provided (in PPT format) some information on the process of issuing a news release and generating media interest. All of these documents have been posted on a webpage dedicated to this purpose.
We have also posted a complete copy of the State of the States report so that you can search it for state-specific information to use in your media efforts. NAGC's summary document, State of the Nation, has also been posted so that you can see how NAGC is characterizing the situation across the country.
Many of you have used previous issues of State of the States in your advocacy efforts so the format and content may be familiar to you. Typically, reporters are interested in hearing about the effect of your state's support, or lack thereof, on students and they also are interested in hearing how your state compares to others in your region and to the nation. More details on all this are included in the PPT posted on the website.
Website
All the information and media tools for state associations is posted at http://www.nagc.org/index2.aspx?id=8714. You’ll note that the news release templates provide a different address for the State of the States report so that reporters do not see all the supporting documents.
We urge you to develop and distribute a news release to reporters across your state this week if possible. At a minimum we suggest you post a release on your association websites so that your members and visitors may read about how your state is doing and can learn about the State of the States report.
If you have questions or need more information, please contact me or Nick Manetto at B&D at janec@nagc.org or nick.manetto@bakerd.com
We look forward to seeing news coverage from across the country. Please send us links to articles in your local press; we’ll post them on our website.
Thank you!
